Data governance has a reputation problem. But governance doesn't have to be bureaucratic.
Why Governance Matters Early
Starting early, with lightweight practices, is far easier than retrofitting governance onto a chaotic data environment.
The Minimum Viable Governance
1. Know What Data You Have
Start with a spreadsheet: What data do we collect? Where is it stored? Who owns it? How sensitive is it?
2. Define Data Ownership
Every dataset needs an owner—someone accountable for its quality and appropriate use.
3. Classify Sensitivity
Public - Can be shared externally. Internal - Employees only. Restricted - Need-to-know basis.
4. Access Controls
Match access to sensitivity. Role-based access that follows the principle of least privilege.
5. Basic Documentation
Document what each dataset contains, how it's updated, and known limitations.
Scaling Governance
As you grow, layer on additional capabilities: formalized access requests, data catalogs, dedicated governance roles.
